Portrait of the month July/August: Part three

With this portrait of the month, we will be presenting scholarship holders from Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia who were successful last year in applying for the “Research Grants” programme. We have prepared a series of interviews in three parts to be published between July and August 2023.

The “Research Grants” programme offers four different types of grants for which application deadlines are 31 August 2023: Doctoral Programmes, Bi-nationally Supervised Doctoral Degrees / Cotutelle, One-Year Grants for Doctoral Candidates and Short-Term Grants. What is your everyday life like as a DAAD scholarship holder in Germany? What did you notice particularly in your everyday life or what did you find particularly strange?

As a recipient of the esteemed DAAD scholarship for my doctoral studies in Germany, my life has been enriched in numerous ways. The scholarship has provided me with a valuable opportunity to fully immerse myself in my research, without the financial concerns that often burden students. Unlike many others, I am fortunate to have the freedom to solely focus on my studies and intellectual pursuits. Each day begins with a well-planned routine; After a quick breakfast accompanied by a cup of coffee, I dedicate time to read and respond to emails. Additionally, I prepare for any research colloquia or academic gatherings scheduled at my graduate center throughout the day. When I don’t have specific commitments, I skilfully manage my time, balancing the exploration of relevant literature, advancing my research, and nurturing a well-rounded social and personal life.

Before embarking on my journey to Germany, I had heard a wide range of perspectives on life in the country. While some accounts were positive and inspiring, others planted seeds of doubt in my mind. However, upon my arrival, any concerns quickly dissipated. I was met with bureaucratic hurdles, but the unwavering support and selflessness of my newfound German friends swiftly helped me navigate those challenges. The connections I forged in my university town have been invaluable, and I’m grateful for their assistance. Having resided in Germany for over a year, I can confidently proclaim that life here is filled with captivating and immersive cultural experiences. I have had the privilege of attending numerous artistic events, exhibitions, and festivals, which have expanded my understanding and appreciation of German culture. Furthermore, my German friends have graciously invited me to partake in their holiday celebrations and joyous moments, providing me with an intimate glimpse into the fabric of German life. These experiences have deepened my connection to the local community and nurtured a sense of belonging.
